Masonry in Orange, NJ
Brick and concrete work outside the house, including front steps, walkways, repointing, and poured concrete.
Concrete steps and walkways move over the years, usually from water getting underneath and freezing, and once a step cracks or a walkway heaves it keeps getting worse every winter instead of better. We rebuild steps and walkways properly from the base up, so the new concrete or brick has somewhere to drain instead of sitting on the same wet ground that broke the last one.
Brick repointing is different work entirely. It is about the mortar joints between the bricks, not the bricks themselves, and it matters because failed mortar lets water behind the brick face where it can freeze, push, and eventually crack the brick from the inside out. Repointing done with the wrong mortar mix, too hard for the old brick, can actually cause more cracking than it fixes, which is a common problem on older Orange houses built with softer mortar than what gets sold at the hardware store today.
Poured concrete for patios, walkways, and driveways is its own job, with the right base, the right slope for drainage, and the right cure time before anyone walks on it or drives on it.
